Meet the Builder

BEC Construction, Inc: A Tradition of Quality Built upon Strength and integrity
by Peggy Mishoe

Exquisite customized homes along the southern Grand Strand stands as stately confirmation of the talents and abilities of the strong professional team at BEC Construction.

Led by owner Berry Coggeshall, that team has moved the company to the forefront in the building industry since it was founded in 1986. Their homeowners speak only of pleasant building experiences and satisfaction with their homes.

BEC homes are located near the blue Atlantic on oceanfront, river and waterway lots, on individual sites and in the most prestigious communities. Those communities include DeBordieu, Prince George, the Peninsula and Inlet Pointe South in Litchfield, Heritage Plantation, Mount Gilead, Wachesaw Plantation, Willbrook Plantation and others where homeowners can enjoy their homes and spectacular views.

Tom and Margie Humphries’ 4,400-square-foot Lowcountry-style brick home at Prince George is all they hoped it would be. They lived in Atlanta, GA, while it was being constructed. Tom says, “Each time we came, we saw that progress was being made and we were pleased with what we saw.”

Situated on a bluff that enabled them to have the basement they desired, with the back almost completely glass, the home offers beautiful views of the Intracoastal Waterway and surrounding areas. “We never tire of it,” Tom said.

The Humphries were impressed with Berry, his employees and subcontractors who have been on Berry’s team for many years. Tom says, “We had no surprises. Berry stuck to his schedule. All of his subcontractors were lined up and ready to go when he needed them. He was very accurate in his record-keeping and it was easy to determine what he’d done each month and what the charges represented.”

Berry’s precise accounting and management systems are engineered to save time and money in construction while building the best homes possible within his clients’ budgets.

Before entering the building industry, Berry was real estate broker at Dunes Realty, Inc. He is now a licensed South Carolina broker, a SC Residential Homebuilder and an unlimited general contractor. His experience and the education he received while earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a masters in business administration help make his company strong in all areas.

Having known and worked with Berry for years, Gairy Nichols, a principal at Dunes Realty, is very familiar with Berry’s work habits and ethics. When Gairy and his wife, Marcia, decided to build a new home in Mount Gilead, they turned to Berry.

Gairy says, “We had a wonderful experience. One of the reasons that I used Berry is because Berry knew that I did not want to cut corners during construction. Additionally, I wanted the best building materials, and since I did not know what was available, I depended on him. Berry has excellent work habits, is analytical and is a good communicator. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Gairy adds, “Berry is not only a fine builder, he is a smart businessman. His dedication to the customer provides a professional building experience.”

BEC built a home for Charles and Emily Ragsdale in Murrells Inlet, and when the Ragsdales decided to move to DeBordieu, they had BEC build them the same house. Emily says, “The quality of Berry’s work is what impressed me. I also thought he was a very good businessman. He doesn’t cut corners and everything is like he said it would be. With both houses, people told us it would be a nightmare, but we just didn’t have any problems.”

Charles adds, “Berry is as honest as the day is long. You get what you pay for. It was fun going through the process and I’d build another one.”

When the Ragsdales met with architect David Graham of the Graham Group to design their home, Berry was there, and his advice and suggestions saved them time and money. It is Berry’s custom to work with his clients and the architects who design their homes to offer advice on building materials and procedures. He is involved from the early development stages of the planning process to the end, and he often works with them for months before the working plan is completed and constructions begins.

Berry says, “Our homes are highly customized and are typically designed by an architect. Some of the results of good management is that our jobs get finished on schedule and on budget.”

BEC built Robert and Joni Whitehead’s home by the creek in Waverly Mills in 1993, and they are quick to recommend the company. Speaking of the durability of their home, Robert said, “It’s just like they finished it yesterday.”

The Whiteheads value Berry’s advice, which has always turned out to be good advice for them. They’ve called Berry before taking several steps such as constructing a wall of built-in cabinetry and building a dock and bulkhead. Robert says, “Nine years later, we still call Berry and it never seems to burden him.”

While building their homes, the Whiteheads and other homeowners were fortunate to have the advantage of the combined knowledge and experience of the entire BEC team. That team of professionals includes Project Manager Marvin G. Parson, Superintendent Tim McCormick, Superintendent R. Glaze Rollins, bookkeeper/secretary Linda Conway, and a crew of experienced carpenters who perform interior detail work as well as some customer service work.

Berry says, “We all pull together as a team, and that gives us a lot of resources to solve problems and makes for a smooth job.”

Berry hires only reputable, licensed and qualified subcontractors, and like his staff, most of them have been on his team for years. He not only makes certain his company is properly insured, but also requires that his subcontractors be. He says, “That gives the homeowners double coverage.” BEC Construction also builds commercial buildings and does real estate development and repairs. Berry has a deep appreciation for nature and strives to protect the environment.

Under a canopy of oak trees, the Murrells Inlet branch of the Conway National Bank stands as a testimonial to the creativity and skill of Berry and his BEC team. Berry teamed up with architect Phil Herrington of Herrington Architecture, Inc. and Dana Arneman, Vice President and loan officer at Conway National Bank, to situate the bank building so that the oaks could be preserved.

Dana says, “We get a lot of compliments on the bank, both the interior and exterior, and how it blends with the surroundings. We were very pleased to have Berry build this bank. The overall experience was just exceptional. Berry has a wonderful business sense. He has the ability to be a good builder and he’s got good peopled working for him.”

Berry, who is devoted to his own family, understands that families don’t need to worry about their homes and he does all that he can to prevent them from ever having to. He realizes the importance of enjoying your family and he likes to hunt, fish, and spend time outdoors with his wife, Lynn, and their children, Avery, Beck and Caleb.

At Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, Berry has served or is presently serving in numerous positions, including the finance and building committees and as chairman of the Board of Trustees and the Stewardship Committee. Among other things, he is active in the Boy Scouts, where he searches for and approves adult leaders.

He says, “I do think it’s important to give back to the community that has given to you.” The fact that Berry is strong in all areas of his business and personal life assures the safety and security that homeowners need. They can rest assured that they are dealing with a company that is strong enough to give them the home or commercial building that they desire and stable enough to be there for them in the future.
